Course Outline and Objectives
Japanese → English Interpreting 101 MOOC is an open-access, self-study course. Split over 10 lessons, it is designed to help you to not only develop an understanding of knowledge fundamental to the field of interpreting but also improve your ability to interpret consecutively and simultaneously.
Who is this course for?
Anyone who has passed N1 and is interested in become a Japanese-English interpreter.
Anyone who has passed N2 or N3 and is interested in improving:
Japanese language proficiency
Knowledge about the field of interpreting
How long will it take to complete each lesson on this course?
Expect to spend three or more hours on each lesson. Also, feel free to stop a lesson part way through and continue when you have time.
Instructor: Prof. John McLean
Yasuda University, Hiroshima, Japan
John oversees the Department of English Interpreting Stream at Yasuda University in Hiroshima, Japan. Originally from the UK, he has lived in Japan for close to 25 years. He is a postgraduate alumnus of the University of Warwick, University of Sheffield, and University of Liverpool. In recent years, he has interpreted/translated/subtitled for media outlets in Japan and abroad (TV Asahi, Reuters, AP, NBC, ESPN, Al Jazeera, CBC...), Japanese filmmakers screening abroad, foreign filmmakers screening in Japan, and UNIJAPAN. He has also promoted films in discussions and debates televised on Japanese TV and has interviewed foreign filmmakers in talk shows at international film festivals in Japan.
